Duct Wrap should be applied by studying the flow of air through a duct and adhering the duct wrap in a manner that stops extraneous airflow or heat or cooling energy. Poorly applied duct wrap will roll up up into balls or mounds and stress HVAC airflow fans overcoming physical airflow retardants. Overlap and poorly aligned duct wrap when wrapped at the duct overlap point or hinges will cause significant cooling, heating, or air circulation loss. 

Duct wrap should support sustainable use of energy and not simply patch decaying areas of the duct corridor. HVAC motors and fans drawing more energy trying to progress warmer or cooled air will waste the special temperature qualities of that air and degrade the air path delivery at its final destination. Duct wrap should preserve the temperature inside the air duct and provide thermal support to the entire duct structure. 

If duct airflow is conducted from an East to West direction, then an increasing buildup of duct wrap that smoothes the path of airflow in that direction is advisable. Suppressing air pockets or air bubbles and aligning duct wrap edges so they successively layer over each other can convey a smooth flow of air and not place stress on HVAC systems.

Smooth surface installation of duct wrap is always preferable. Many duct wrap systems are mold resistant, an important feature for sea level or Alpine residences where hot and cold extremes can form meltwater issues with mold growth. Commercial kitchen or manufacturing premises should have fire-rated duct wrap installations to prevent grease or chemical ignition.
